To Chop off Your Head. A tragi-comic conundrum in four acts [2021], 2023, viii + 88 pp.
Synopsis
This amusing ‘conundrum’ is set in the mythic present in a remote town in Europe. Twenty years or so before the start, the mayor has surreptitiously purged half its inhabitants: they were loafers and scroungers and of no use to anyone. Since then, the town has prospered. However, Bosca and his sister Dottie had survived the genocide, and Bosca is now set upon retribution. Caught in the eye of the storm is the young, wryly reflective ‘B’. Brought up to believe that he is the child of the enforced incestuous union of Bosca and Dottie, he has a crisis of identity when he discovers that this is not so. The tragic action unfolds against the backdrop of a chaotic re-enactment of an episode from the French Revolution, part of the mayor’s secret agenda to persuade the town that peaceful ends justify violent means. The play is rich in character and includes powerful group scenes.
