O Tell Us Some Truths about Love. Dramatic scenes for a man, a woman and various extras, 2026, xii + 84pp
Synopsis
‘O Tell Me the Truth about Love’ is a witty cabaret song by W. H. Auden and Benjamin Britten, first sung by Hedli Anderson at a private party in the late 1930s. By contrast, this collection of monologues and duos, written between 2015 and 2025, assumes a dramatic audience (‘O Tell Us’), implies that love is not simply reductive (‘Some Truths’) and is variously solemn or witty, sacred or profane, or a mix of any of these. There are four monologues for women, four for men and four duos for a man and a woman, with a spread of ages in each group (ranging from a schoolgirl who secretly adores her maths teacher to a cantankerous and vengeful old Druid). Whereas these offerings are fairly short, the volume closes with a one-act play in five scenes. Glo’ttal Stop depicts a young couple, of whom the wife becomes transfixed by a charismatic Italian, Benede’tto Bo’cca’ccio, only to discover, to her intense dismay, that he has already transfixed her husband. The collection may be given in private or in public, in part or as a whole.
